Mike Gayle
The Life & Soul of the Party
Six friends, Three couples…
And the year that changes their lives forever
My take on the book:
Lots of plot lines anyone could identify with. At first I thought the author would have a difficult time making his characters endearing but he managed to develop each character perfectly whilst seamlessly weaving their stories together. By the middle of the book you’ll come to think of the characters as your friends and see yourself in their mindsets, flaws and decisions. They all made mistakes but the story didn’t need a protagonist nor an antagonist. Each one of his characters was the hero and the evil-doer which makes it so poignant. An honest, brave and raw take on “real life”.
A really great read I related to in so many different levels. Highly recommended to people going through their quarter life crisis and “wander” years. I’m glad I chose it as my in flight book even if it was very bulky. The perfect companion to start off my Melbourne life.
Lines that got to me:
The first truth of being in your thirties: that you can’t always get what you want but that what you’ve got is always better than nothing. – Chris
